Dulux Candlebark Review: The Perfect Beige with a Green Undertone for Modern Australian Homes
Welcome to Interiors by Style! I’m Bozica, a qualified interior designer and colour specialist. In today’s colour review, we’re talking about one of my absolute favourite beiges — Dulux Candlebark. If you love soft, earthy, and timeless colours, this one’s for you!
Candlebark is extremely popular, and for good reason. It’s not only elegant and versatile, but it also sits beautifully within the current shift towards warm beige interiors — a refreshing move away from the cool grey trend.
What Undertone Does Candlebark Have?
Candlebark is a beige with a green undertone — my favourite type to work with. It’s subtle, soft, and very easy to pair with other neutral elements. The best way to see the undertone clearly is by comparing it to a pure white, such as Dulux Vivid White. You’ll instantly notice that earthy green base come through.
The Importance of Testing with Large Samples
Never rely on those tiny paint chips from Bunnings or the store wall! You must test your colours in A4 size samples, especially when working with neutrals. You can either order them directly from Dulux or paint a large sample using a test pot. Always compare it against pure white to confirm the undertone before committing.
LRV of Dulux Candlebark: 55
This colour has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 55, placing it right in the sweet spot for designers. It’s:
Light enough to use throughout an entire room
Deep enough to create beautiful contrast with white trims
Ideal for open-plan living, bedrooms, and living rooms
Just keep in mind: LRV 55 means it won't brighten a north-facing room. But don't worry — if you love the colour, just add plenty of artificial lighting (lamps, downlights, picture lights) and you’re set!
What Whites Pair Well with Candlebark?
To make this beige sing, I recommend:
Dulux Vivid White for skirtings, architraves, and ceilings — crisp and clean, no undertones.
Dulux White Cloak Quarter – a soft warm white that harmonises beautifully with the green undertone in Candlebark.
These create contrast and warmth without clashing.
Where Can You Use Candlebark?
Internally:
Bedrooms
Living rooms
Hallways
Entryways
Open-plan spaces (with good light)
Not ideal in:
Kitchens or north-facing rooms unless well-lit (or you go for a lighter beige)
Externally:
Yes! Candlebark looks stunning on rendered homes or weatherboards. Just remember:
It will look 2–3 shades lighter in the sun
Works beautifully with white windows, gutters, and fascias
⚠️ Avoid pairing with cream windows or orange-toned bricks — it will clash.
What Other Colours Work with Candlebark?
Because Candlebark has a green undertone, it’s incredibly flexible. You can build a stunning palette around it.
Here are some combinations that work beautifully:
Terracotta – adds richness and warmth (great in cushions, rugs, or artwork)
Monochromatic beige scheme – use lighter or deeper beiges with a green base
Earthy greens or natural wood tones – creates an organic, calming atmosphere
You can even test your sofa or bedhead fabric. Hold it next to your Candlebark swatch and see if the undertones align. If they do — magic happens!
Final Thoughts
Dulux Candlebark is timeless, elegant, and practical. It’s one of the best beige neutrals for homes that want warmth without overpowering the space. Whether you’re styling a contemporary home, a coastal retreat, or a classic renovation, this colour fits right in.
